The scope of sociology of education is wide.

1. It helps us to understand the effectiveness of different educational methods in teaching students with different types of intelligence.
2. It studies the effect of the economy on the type of education provided to the students. eg. Education provided in IB, ICSE, SSC, Municipal Schools
3. It helps us to understand the influence of various social agencies like family, school on the students.

4. It deals with general concepts like society, culture, community, class, environment, socialization, internalization, accommodation, assimilation, cultural gap, sub-culture, status, role etc.

5. It further includes matters of education and social class, the state, social forces, cultural change, various problems of role structure, role analysis in relation to the total social system and the micro society of the school such as authority, selection, and Organization of learning, streaming, courses, etc.

6. It is concerned with the analysis of educational conditions in different geographical and ethnic contexts. eg. Educational conditions in rural, urban and tribal areas, in different parts of the country/world, with backgrounds of different races, cultures etc.

7. It studies the relationship between social class, culture, language, parental education, occupation and student achievement

8. It studies the role and structure of the school, peer group on the personality of the students

9. It provides understanding of problems like racism, communalism, gender discrimination etc.


10. It studies the role of schools in the socialization of students.

11. It suggests ways to develop the spirit of national integration, international understanding, scientific temper, globalization among the students

12. It promotes research studies related to planning, organization and application of various principles in education.

13. All these are the concerns of education and sociology as inseparable discipline focusing on the problems of the society.
